About the Editors: Sunil Khijwania received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, in 1999. He visited the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Tokyo, Japan as a Monbusho Post Doctoral Fellow during 2000-2002. Subsequently, he held Post Doctoral Research Associate position at Mississippi State University, Starkville, USA, during 2002-2004. In 2004, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati as an Assistant Professor, where he is currently an Associate Professor. He was an academic visitor during 2008 and Visiting Assistant Professor during 2006 as well as 2007 at the department of Electrical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. He has been working on the various applications of optical fiber and based devices such as Fiber Bragg Gratings. He has published over 75 papers in journals and conference proceedings. He has co-authored six book chapters and co-edited one book on experimental fiber optics. His current research interests are predominantly focused on the design and development of optical fiber sensors employing Photonic Crystal Fiber, fiber gratings, side polished fibers, nano-wire and surface-plasmon resonance apart from the conventional fiber optics techniques aiming applications that span from structural health monitoring, environmental engineering to biomedical science. In addition, his research also involves the understanding of the propagation characteristics of specially designed optical fiber. He is a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA), IEEE Photonics Society and a life member of the Optical Society of India (OSI). Recently, he was elected as a member of the executive council of the Optical Society of India. 

Ashwini Kumar Sharma is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics at IIT Guwahati. He obtained his Master of Science from IIT Delhi and Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur. His Ph.d. work was on the laser ablation studies on the formation of nitrides and oxides using nanosecond and picosecond pulsed lasers. Subsequently he carried out his post- doctoral research work at Clausthal University of Technology, Germany, where he worked on fiber optic evanescent wave sensors. He won the Indian Laser Association best Ph.D. thesis award for the year 2004. His research interests include laser-matter interaction, growth and characterization of nanostructures, and their applications in optoelectronic devices and sensors.
